Description
1970 AMC Javelin
I remember well as a kid I would spend hours on my Aurora slot racing track that had banked curves, long straights and even a chicane. My favorite car was a red, white and blue Javelin with a number 6. This was also my fastest car made possible by putting soft almost spongy tires on the back, and hours of practice pushing the limits of the track and my push button controller. Gosh, being a kid was so much fun back then!
For consignment, a purpose-built vintage race car fabricated in the early 1990's as a vintage race car driven by Dick Kantrud. It was raced in GT-1 and Group 6 classes and documented locations, finishes and other information are all in logbooks. This car is bill of sale only and is not street legal, and has several podium finishes from those vintage races.
Exterior
Paying homage to the Team Penske drivers of Mark Donohue and Peter Revson when in 1970 this team switched from a Camaro to the AMC Javelin. Alternating blue, white and red cover this racer with the front half being bathed in blue with some Sunoco Advertising on the doors. The next section contains the #6 and is bathed in white and the rear is beautiful deep red. In front headlights have been covered over with metal discs, and below the bumper is a large chin spoiler in polished stainless steel. The fenders have been slightly modified to accommodate the wide 15-inch polished Aero Racing wheels wrapped in Hoosier rubber. A hood scoop sits in the center of the pinned hood, and the window trimmings remain although no driver's glass is in. A wonderful sloping back tooth's car meets up with the trunk deck which continues the gentle descent to the rear spoiler. A chrome bumper is still on and the original taillights are in between the trunk lid and the bumper. The passenger front quarter is a bit misaligned with the passenger door on this racer.
Interior
Within a full roll cage the interior has been totally stripped and now houses the fuel cooler, fire extinguisher and a Kirkey high back racing bucket for the driver. A custom fabricated dash lays out all the gauges and switches in panoramic format easily accessible for the driver. In the center is another fabrication in the form of a center console to house the shifter. Door panels are painted steel with no knobs or armrests. Stainless steel braided hoses and MSD wiring can be seen snaking its way throughout the cabin. A trio of fluid containers sits atop the dash on the passenger's side. In the trunk which has also been caged sits a Fuel Safe racing cell for the high-octane juice to power this competitor.
Drivetrain
A 366ci Chevrolet block has been carefully machined to look like an AMC engine. It has a Dart Iron Eagle Block, Brodix 18-degree heads, a dry sump oiling system and a front water pump. The distributor has been fashioned to look like an AMC engine. A single 4-barrel carb along with a newer more reliable cam is inside allowing this engine to produce a consigner stated 600hp. It has a Weismann gearbox and is a 4-speed manual. Extra spare gear ratios come with the car. On the back is a Ford 9-inch rear axle. Headers and a jazzy chromed air cleaner cover are mounted as far back to the windshield as they can get for better weight distribution. An aluminum radiator is up front keeping things cool.
Undercarriage
All very simplified with solid floor pans, rockers and suspension. Dual exhaust breaks apart and runs to each side exit just prior to the rear wheel wells. Front independent fully adjustable suspension and rear leaf springs along with 4-wheel disc brakes work together to aid this car in negotiating a fast turn.
Drive-Ability
Our crack decoder took this car out and reported its fast, furious and handles well, but needs new tires. Some extras are extra transmission ratios, logbooks, a set of Daisy wheels, and a mis-matched set of Aero wheels, along with mufflers for tracks with noise ordinances will come with this car. PLEASE NOTE: The Weismann gearbox does not have a reverse gear in it.
Let's go racing kids, looking much like the Penske cars of yore driven by the legends, and this car wins just like they did. Purpose built just for racing and looking the vintage part of the 1970's in patriotic red, white and blue. Buckle up!
